Description: Police Quest: SWAT 2 (1998) was an isometric view, team-based RTS game in the line of the classic X-Com or Jagged Alliance games, but with a more tactical component. The game takes place in real-time, with the player issuing orders to individual SWAT team members from a three-quarter overhead view of the level. Many of the game's missions were based on real life events, such as the North Hollywood shootout.

The game's story revolves around a conflict between SWAT and an emerging left-wing domestic terrorist group called "the Five Eyes". The game features two separate campaigns, one in which you control SWAT and another in which you take the role of a lieutenant in the Five Eyes terrorist organization.

As a homage, Sonny Bonds, the protagonist of the original Police Quest series, is one of the SWAT officers available for you to send into missions during the SWAT campaign. Sonny is an element leader and has some of the best stats in the game.

With much more positive reviews than the previous two games, it still had several flaws, such as the overly complicated interface and imperfect AI.

The newly released Stetchkov Syndicate expansion pack builds off of that solid foundation, offering more difficult scenarios, thanks to more aggressive and unpredictable artificial intelligence. You'll also find the expected array of additional weapons, a new multiplayer mode, and cooperative play for up to 10 players this time.

The Stetchkov Syndicate gives you a few new tricks to take into the field in the form of new weapons and tactics. Over the course of the campaign, you'll unlock a variety of new equipment. New guns include a submachine gun modeled after the real-life FN-P90, a Colt accurized rifle, a grenade launcher, and even a stun gun with two shots and longer range than the Taser from the original game. You'll also be able to deploy glow sticks to mark off rooms that you've cleared, as well as use night-vision goggles. Suspects can arm themselves with a light machine gun, a new machine pistol, or even a .50 caliber handgun. The expansion pack now lets you issue delayed orders, much like in Rainbow Six. This is useful for rooms with multiple entry points, as it lets you stack your four-man element on one door and issue a go code while you break into the other door. You can even split your element into pairs and have them each break into a separate door at the same time. There's also a new punch command that you can use to subdue stubborn civilians or suspects into being zip-cuffed. This is actually useful, because if you ran out of nonlethal munitions in the original SWAT 4, you were sometimes required to shoot civilians in the leg in order to get them to submit.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is primarily an FPS, but also features many RPG elements. The player does not gain additional abilities or statistics like most RPGs, but is instead allowed to use various types of equipment that are either purchased or found throughout the game world. There are a large number of items in the game, so the player has customization choices which are constrained primarily by how much exploring they do.
The game also attempts to blend the story and character interaction which are commonly associated with RPGs. However, unlike RPGs, conversation branches are extremely limited and do not significantly influence the course of the game, aside from accepting or declining missions.

Duke Nukem 3D (PC)

Strangely enough, Duke Nukem 3D is the third instalment in the Duke Nukem saga and, in a dramatic break with tradition, appears to be largely three dimensional. Of course, this is good news for Duke who is now able to develop a little more depth and understanding, the caring, Oprah-loving bloke that he is. The release of DN-3D heralded the beginning of a new era of interactive 3D games and rivalled many other similar games of its time. Duke's witty one-liners and humorous environments (you tell me there's nothing funny about an alien cavern in the side of a cliff...) add to gameplay and replay value, as do the beautifully crafted levels and original design. The game takes you to alien infested L.A., an orbiting space station, the surface of the moon and to various other delightful, friendly urban settings.
